A new version (2009.529) of the official cross-compiling environment of hackable:1 is available. It uses binaries from the emdebian project as well. In short, most outstanding issues were fixed, and cross-compiling packages or kernels works fine out of the box.
The documentation is found at:
http://trac.hackable1.org/trac/wiki/CrossCompiler
While the archives are stored there:
http://download.hackable1.org/cross/
They were generated for both i386 and amd64 hosts.

We have been working hard on making hackable:1 usable as a daily phone and the Bearstech developers are starting to use it as daily phone (eat your own dogfood!).
Plus we have now the full set of PIM applications with calendar, contacts and tasks and all you need for the internet with browser, feedreader, IRC client and full blown mail app.
You can check it out in the rev4 preview compilation at download.hackable1.org and a screencast on youtube. Enjoy!

New roadmap and organisation.
We have divided the project into several sub-projects :
- "Website"
- "Phone"
- "LooknFeel"
- "Core Libraries & Applications"
- "Applications"
- "Developer tools"
- "Build image"
- "Optimizations"
In theory, all sub-projects are independent and can be parallelized. Each subproject has a leader and a goal.
As we need some priority, we are working on these projects first :
- "Build image"
- "Phone"
- "Website"
You can read more from the announcement on the mailing-list.

A word about HOUM
The third Openmoko community gathering took place last Thursday in Paris. It was called HOUM, for "Hackable:1 and Openmoko User Meeting". The motto of the evening was definitely about openness, with the early inauguration of the new Bearstech office, the release of hackable:1 rev3, and the active participation of the audience!
The openness initiatives did not stop there, and a glance at the beginning of the slides (French) should suffice to convince you. After everyone presented his own experience and expectations with the Openmoko, the SHR, hackable:1 and RunningBear projects were presented. We will also remember the ensuing debate, particularly the discussions around innovation in Open Source, and how it competes with the rest of the world.
We thank you all for a relaxed yet productive evening, and hope to this you again in March or April during the next HOUM!

Some hackable:1 developers from Bearstech are getting ready to attend FOSDEM, at the Libre University of Brussels on February 7th and 8th. Marcus Bauer will give a Lightning Talk at 17:40 on the 7th, whereas Pierre Pronchery will host a workshop in the Embedded Devroom at 9:00 on the 8th. You may otherwise meet either one of us at the GNOME or OpenBSD booth. See you there :)

The project received some publicity from a French news site, and our website has then been under moderately heavy load. In order to prevent outages in the future, we have split our resources to different servers. The releases, images and packages were all moved to http://download.hackable1.org/. Redirections should be in place already, do not hesitate to tell us when not. Sorry for the inconvenience!
06/01/2009
As announced on the development mailing-list, daily built images are now available. They are generated every morning around 4:00 and uploaded to this server: http://build.hackable1.org/. Happy testing!

The Lightning Talk at 25C3 was followed up by two Openmoko events: a user and reseller gathering around the kd85/OpenBSD table, and then a 5 hour workshop! We would like to thank all of the participants for a tremendous time hacking with the device.
We are also sorry we did not manage to organize and announce it earlier. However, I can already mention that we will definitely attend FOSDEM and the RMLL in 2009. See you there and happy new year!

khorben gave a Lightning Talk about hackable:1 at the 25C3, the 2008 edition of the annual CCC congress. As every talk during this event, it was filmed and some rushes may be online already. The slides are also found here.

The second revision, our first official release is out. Lots of improvements, especially with regard to using the Freerunner as a phone have been made. Echo cancellation is implemented, no more reregistering (Openmoko bug #1024), SMS works, gsmmuxer can be used, etc. just to name a few advancements.
Have fun!

The first beta version is ready. Still a work-in-progress and rough around the corners but it is installable in five minutes from the tar balls, boots up, can make and receive phone calls and has working GPS.
